Workinpr.com Monthly Q&A with PR Professionals
December 2002

Marc Hausman
CEO and President
Strategic Communications Group

1. How did you get into PR?
After graduating with a degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, I got a job in the corporate communications office at a local grocery chain writing radio spots for the deli division. It took about six months of writing about lunchmeat for me to decide that a career in public relations was a better path to follow.

2. Briefly, describe your typical workday.
I get to the office at about 7:30 am to get through Emails and administrative work. By 9:30 am, I'm on the phone calling on potential new clients, speaking with clients and maintaining Strategic's other corporate relationships. I typically have four or five sales presentations or client meetings a week. I try to take the last hour of the day to review Emails and update my action list for the next day. I am typically on my way home by 8 pm.

3. What is the best part of your job?
The satisfaction of building an entrepreneurial, performance-driven organization like Strategic. I am very much an entrepreneur at heart.

4. What is the worst part of your job?
Dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities of running a business, such as handling requirements with our corporate attorneys and accountants. Thankfully, Strategic's Chief Operating Officer is very skilled in this area and takes much of this responsibility off of my plate so I can focus on new business development, corporate positioning and client management.

5. What is the biggest lesson you've learned during your PR career?
The world works on relationships.

6. What is the most unique thing about your company?
Strategic may be the only public relations agency to offer its clients access to a proprietary Network of Relationships to identify sales, channel and partnership opportunities. We measure our success on our ability to help our clients increase revenue and the Strategic Network of Relationships is a core part of our offering.

7. What is your ideal dream job?
Point guard for the Washington Wizards.
