Workinpr.com Monthly Q&A with PR Professionals
April 2002

Julie Miller, Internet Project Manager
Technicolor

1. How did you get into PR?
In all honesty, like many former journalists and writers, I felt I could earn a better living--and have a nice wardrobe--on a PR professional's salary. I also felt that if I went into tech PR, I would never be out of a job!

2. Briefly describe your typical workday.
Since I was wrong about my tech PR strategy and did lose my job, I'm now working as an Internet Project Manager in Technicolor's Marketing Department that utilizes my across-the-board experience in journalism, corporate marketing communications and agency PR. So far, my workday has involved ramp up on branding/divisions/and players and managing a company-wide Internet strategy plan across divisions.

3. What is the best part of your job?
Learning, learning, learning. I never realized what a sheltered technological life I led as a writer.

4. What is the worst part of your job?
Feeling that I'm not learning fast enough.

5. What is the biggest lesson you've learned during your PR career?
You're never safe in an agency. In all seriousness -- and this is for those on the agency side -- remember that while you're being hired for your ideas and strategic thinking, you're also in the service business.

6. What is your ideal dream job?
The next best thing to writing a best-seller and coasting for a while would be to work as a Manager or Director in a corporate setting where I'm able to continue to utilize my wide range of skills and simultaneously mentor a younger staff. Ideally, this "corporation" would be an industry innovator in technology or healthcare.
